Since November 2010, a reality TV show featuring round-the-clock live coverage of a family of pandas at Chiang Mai zoo has become a cult hit with Thai viewers. The show was started by True Corporation following the birth of panda cub Lin Ping to her parents Lin Hui and Shung Shung as part of the country‚ panda breeding programme.
Lin Ping‚ cute antics proved a hit amongst young and old Thais alike and the show is currently broadcast 24 hours a day on television sets throughout Chiang Mai in northern Thailand. Initially I was surprised at the cult status of Lin Ping, with Lin Ping t-shirts and cuddly toys available from outlets all across Thailand. However, when I sat and watched Lin Ping being trained by her keeper to roll over for treats, I was also captivated by her spirited nature and cuddly appearance.
When holidaying in Chiang Mai, tourists only need to switch on their television to see Lin Ping and her family for themselves, although it is also possible to pay a personal visit to Lin Ping herself by visiting Chiang Mai zoo, where Lin Ping is growing up as a testament to the success of Thailand‚ panda breeding programme.
