Songsaa Island Resort – the most romantic place in Cambodia

A new island resort and the first of its kind in Cambodia is set to be opening soon, offering holidaymakers a new and luxurious beach experience. Song-Saa Private Island is a super exclusive resort built in the pristine Koh Rong archipelago covering two islands connected by a footbridge and surrounded by a marine reserve.

The name ‘Song saa’ itself means ‘lovers’ in Khmer, as the two islands Koh Bong and Koh Oun fondly refer to the pet names that Cambodian couples give each other: ‘Koh meaning island, ‘Bong’ meaning boyfriend (literally ‘older one’) and ‘Oun meaning girlfriend (literally ‘little one’). The name of the resort thus clearly places itself as one of Cambodia’s best destinations for honeymooners and couples alike. (more…)

News article – Thailand is home to more wild tigers than previously thought

There’s a great article in The Guardian today, saying that Thailand’s Thaplan National Park could mask a larger tiger population than previously believed. This is great news for a country with great biodiversity but whose animal populations have been massively reduced by urban development and poaching. (more…)

A Night on Jungle Rafts

For those looking to get really off the beaten track in Thailand, Kanchanaburi province in the west offers one of Thailand’s most unique resorts: a “floatel” moored in the River Kwae (pronounced Kw-air as in ‘pair’).  I paid a visit to the Jungle Rafts and spent a night there, and can honestly say is offers one of the most unusual tourist experiences available in Thailand.

World’s longest kiss in Thailand for Valentine’s Day

A record-breaking attempt at the world’s longest ever kiss in Pattaya, Thailand, saw couples embrace for more than 33 hours. The seven couples that took part were allowed beverages drunk through straws and bathroom breaks provided that they continue kissing throughout. The attempt is currently awaiting verification from the Guinness Book of Records. (more…)

A Year in Vietnam

Coming up next week is one of the most important festivals in the Vietnamese calendar: Tet, or Vietnamese New Year. Tet marks the beginning of spring, and heralds the coming of a new zodiac animal sign for the year. It is a fresh beginning for Vietnamese people and the traditions carried out at this time reflect these beliefs. After taking up a degree in Vietnamese language at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, Seb Rumsby spent a year in Vietnam from September 2008 to 2009 to help his understanding of both Vietnamese culture and language.
