Vietnamese Rhino Extinct

8 December 2011 by

Sad news from Vietnam, where the WWF and other wildlife and conservation organisations have announced that they believe the last remaining Vietnamese Rhino has been poached. The Javan Rhino had been on the critically endangered list for some time, but now it appears the battle for its survival has been lost. Once prevalent from Indonesia to India, the Javan Rhino was thought to only exist in Vietnam and Indonesia.

WWF Manager for Vietnam Simon Cox added: “The single most important action to conserve Vietnam’s endangered species is protecting their natural habitat and deterring poaching and illegal wildlife trade. The report shows that these actions were inadequate to save the Javan rhino in Vietnam and this continued situation will no doubt lead to the extinction of many more species from Vietnam. Vietnam’s protected areas need more rangers, better training and monitoring, and more accountability.”

I personally recall visitting National Parks in Vietnam and not seeing a single bird or animal, only insects. There was a sanctuary at the entrance to one of the parks where various primates that had been rescued from poachers were housed. Safe behind wire fences, it seemed somewhat tragic that they were not safer in their natural habitat which surrounded them.

With their proximity to China, whose demand for exotic creatures appears to remain unchanged, and their own passion for hunted meats, it appears the battle for species conservation in Vietnam will be long and tough. Some sources suggest that a kilo of Rhino horn will fetch as much as 30.000 us dollars in China.

Tigers, elephants, crocodiles and a variety of monkeys are still on Vietnam’s endangered list. Let’s hope we can report more positive news in the battle for their preservation in due course.

It is thought there are between 15 and 60 remaining Javan Rhinos in Indonesia, some footage of which can be seen below. For Rhino conservation see www.rhinoconservation.org.

Sri Lanka’s Colombo – Matara Expressway & Highway open at last!

1 December 2011 by

Sri Lanka has opened its first highway! We have reported the ongoing delays and complications a few times in this blog over the past 18 months, but now the time is right to announce the grand opening! The road was opened by president Mahinda Rajapakse, and whilst some finishing touches are still going on with slip roads and other access roads, the general public are now entitled to pay the toll and drive south.

The road is to be extended to Katunayake International Airport and the centre of Colombo. The project has taken almost 10 years to complete, with a variety of loans and Japanese & Chinese funding & labour assistance. Sri Lanka’s road and rail networks suffered heavily from poor maintenance and improvements throughout the civil war. However this period of peace has seen huge development projects undertaken, with new ports, airports, roads, bridges and assorted infrastructure already massively improved. Whilst being uber-convenient for tourism, the road also promisses to be a massive tool for trade and development in the country.

The expressway runs from the suburbs of Colombo to Matara, (more…)

Lao Airlines expands fleet with A320 order

Lao Airlines have expanded their fleet and have ordered two Airbus A320. This airbus will be flying on a new route between Vientiane and Singapore. This new route is expected to start on 1st November 2011 and will operate 3 times weekly on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. The airline also operate a fleet of propeller powered ATR 72s and Xian MA 60s on their other international and internal routes.

Laos is one of Asia’s least accessible countries – landlocked and surrounded by vast mountain ranges. Journeys by road and boat can be as long as they are spectacular. If your time is precious when on your Laos holiday then you might well need to use flights at some point during the trip. Experience Travel tailor make trips to all corners of Laos by any available means of transport. If you want to keep flying to an absolute minimum, then have a peek at our Luang Prabang to Hanoi Overland Itinerary. It is possible to start this trip in Bangkok and travel by train to northern Thailand before heading into Laos and taking a boat to Luang Prabang. However, most people prefer to short taxi to the airport followed by flight option! For some reason, Lao Airlines have had an unfair reputation for bad safety in some chattering travel circles. In reality the airline has an excellent safety record, complies with all recognised international aviation standards and received the International Arch of Europe Award in 2007 and 2008. The new flights from Singapore expand the options for travelling long-haul into Laos and will be a very welcome addition. (more…)

Sri Lanka’s Colombo-Matara highway delayed again

5 September 2011 by

The grand opening of Sri Lanka’s first highway, between Colombo and Matara, has been postponed until December 2011. The highway (also known as the Southern Lanka Express Highway or simply the Southern Expressway) has been plagued with funding and construction issues for almost decade now although it really does seem to be a matter of months and not years this time.

The opening was re-scheduled for September 2011 but alas we will have to wait a little longer before experiencing the shortened journey times for ourselves. The multi-lane toll road will run inland and cut the drive to Matara from 4 hours to 1.5 hours.Experience Travel have up-to-date information about all things Sri Lankan so contact us for impartial advice for your Sri Lanka holiday.

Amazing Thailand? Now it’s a Miracle!

The TAT (Tourism Authority of Thailand) has announced plans to ditch the country’s much-used slogan ‘Amazing Thailand’, and replace it with ‘Miracle Thailand’. Such a move is not uncommon following a change of government, and this new cabinet will request 8 billion baht in government funding for the campaign. The campaign is aimed at increasing the number of visitors to the country after a troubled few years. As is often then case in Thailand, the specifics of the proposal remain extremely vague and it is unclear what happens for the ongoing promotion of the ‘Amazing Thailand’ brand which is seen as being very successful, alongside the ‘Unseen Thailand’ tool for marketing lesser known hotels. Many in the private sector have expressed doubts about the need for a re-brand and the appropriateness of the new slogan. (more…)

Sri Lankan Wild Elephant Population Larger Than Expected

A recent survey of Sri Lanka’s wild elephant population has revealed some welcome news concerning growth in numbers. Contrary to what many had expected, it is now thought that the numbers have grown to 5,879 in total. National Parks and known ‘Elephant Corridors’ were closed for three days in August whilst Wildlife Department officials conducted the first in-depth survey since the end of the island’s civil war in 2009. Many had feared that years of conflict (which brought about the closure of many National Parks) and general urbanisation and expansion of the civilian population would have lead to a decline in numbers. The survey also revealed that there are over 1,100 baby elephants. Over 1,500 locations were monitored for the survey, with over 3,000 people taking part in the gathering of information. (more…)

Maalu Maalu Resort, Passekudah – luxury arrives on Sri Lanka’s east coast

25 July 2011 by

We expect this to be the first of a string of hotels to open their doors in the coming years, as this most sensationally beautiful part of the island re-enters people’s travel plans. Previously the only developments had been around the port city of Trincomalee and surrounding beaches of Upaveli and Niaveli. However, the glorious untouched coastline along the east, from Trincomalee all the way down to Arugam Bay, is blessed with many a fine stretch of sand. (more…)
