Bangkok Floods

9 November 2011 by

Just a quick update to say that while the center of Bangkok – and the main tourist districts remain flood free, the water does seem to be creeping closer whilst it washes through Bangkok. Our local partners are doing a sterling job re-routing people and making all the necessary arrangements – and this despite being flooded themselves in some cases. Thank you so much Addie, Siriwan, Cherry and all at Destination Asia Thailand for your enormously hard work.

The rest of Thailand is now not affected at all and the sun is shining. Currently we are re-routing all clients travelling over the next week away from Bangkok – if that is what they choose. Though all flights are going through the main airport as normal.

Note though that Suvarabhumi Airport is open and functioning entirely normally. The main Bangkok Airport was built fairly recently and they had flooding very much in mind as flooding is very common in Thailand in Bangkok in particular as it is a flood basin in effect. They built huge flood defenses and no one expects these to be breached.

The Thai authorities were furious with what they felt was a very misleading picture in the foreign press recently – have a look here if you are interested –

We are putting together Thailand holidays as normal and expect the situation to normalise soon.

Our thoughts go out to all the affected people in Thailand and indeed Cambodia.

Orion Cruises in Southeast Asia

25 July 2011 by

Cruise ShipOrion cruises in Southeast Asia Orion Cruises are now offering discerning clientele the opportunity to experience some of the most exciting and exotic parts of Southeast Asia in true comfort and style – until now no other cruise company has come close to offering the same insight into the region as that offered by the Orion Cruises.

The whole idea behind Orion Cruises is to allow their passengers to have truly extraordinary and genuine experiences in isolated parts of the world . The ships themselves are incredibly luxurious offering 5* facilities and great service with a high staff-to-crew ratio, but actually the focus is on the outside world and the experience to be had on shore. Freak Weather In Thailand

29 March 2011 by

Thailand is experiencing some highly unusual weather at present. A cold snap hit the country last week with temperatures reaching record lows in certain areas. Bangkok has experienced three different weather patterns in a week, with winter cold, monsoon rain and tropical heat all present on different days last week. This week has started of particularly cold, with temperatures in the city dropping to below 20 degrees. In areas of Chiang Mai district temperatures may fall to below 10 degrees.

Meteorologists said the snap was only due to last a few more days and has been caused due to a low-pressure ridge. Officials also said they expected the hot season weather to return from the beginning of April, where figures between 30-40 degrees can normally be expected (more…)

The best rooftop bars in Bangkok

20 July 2010 by

The sprawling metropolis of urban Bangkok, with its crowded down-town skyline and sprawling, dense suburbs is best truly appreciated from above. Fortunately, many of the city’s taller buildings are home to rooftop hangouts of varying styles, from easy going student bars to high class cocktail lounges. Most visitors on a holidays in Thailand choose to venture upwards at some point during their stay.

Here I describe a handful of my personal favourites. (more…)

“Zog zag” – Walking in Bangkok

7 July 2010 by

Walking above the traffic...

Walking above the traffic...

The Bangkok Post, on the city’s few English language dailies, recently launched a page on their website called ‘Bangkok Zog Zag’, detailing a number of excellent walks to do in Bangkok.

Walking is not something people usually associate with Bangkok, and I myself will usually head for nearest air-conditioned taxi or subway train on most occasions. However you miss so much by doing so, and those who do walk are often rewarded with serendipitous discoveries (and some of the tastiest food!).

It’s an excellent web-page, with lots of useful info and maps. My personal choice would be the ethnically diverse Yaowarat walk, for the simple reason that I love gadgets and can think of nowhere quite like the hectic streets of Chinatown and around to find incredible items at very reasonable prices. Unlike other cities in the region, Bangkok is not blessed with many green or open spaces, and some of the most picturesque and rewarding walks are to be found in the most crowded areas. Take refuge at some of the more relaxing hotels in the city and spend your days exploring this wonderful metropolis. Contact us at Experience Travel for more ideas in and around Bangkok.

Bangkok Bounces Back

26 May 2010 by

So, after one of the most dangerous, unpredictable and upsetting weeks in the city’s recent history, Bangkok is picking up the pieces and returning to normal. Despite the fact that an overnight curfew between midnight and 4am remains in place until the weekend, the reality on the ground is that the city is calm and recent clashes between anti-government protesters and the Thai military are becoming a memory and not a reality. Thailand Wins ‘Best Tourist Country Award’ from Swedish magazine

17 February 2010 by

Thailand has been named the world’s Best Tourist Country by a leading Swedish travel magazine. Thai Airways also won a second place award for the Best International Flight in 2010.

The magazine, ‘Travel News’, presented the prize at its annual awards ceremony in Stockholm last week. Thailand fought off competition from Australia, Egypt, South Africa, Spain, Turkey, USA and Italy to win the award for the 8th time.

Thailand’s mix of culture, food and stunning environments has long delighted international travellers. We are fans of both the mainstream attractions in Thailand and more ‘off-the-beaten’ track locations and will be adding many more unique properties and destinations to our Thailand portfolio throughout 2010.

Thai Airways has announced a plan to acquire 15 new aircraft and add numerous new routes. Seven 300 seat craft will be purchased for flying routes within the region while a further eight 350 seat craft will be purchased for their long haul routes.

These new aircraft, which the company say will be operational by 2014, are an addition to five A330-300 aircraft that have already been ordered and will be put in service this year and six A380 aircraft that will enter the fleet from 2012-2013. (more…)
