Vietnam Airlines to fly direct to Hanoi and Saigon

Yes: it’s true. Finally there will be a direct flight from UK to Vietnam – Gatwick to be precise from the 8th December this year. There will be 2 direct flights a week to Hanoi and 2 to Saigon (Ho Chi Minh). It is old news now – but the fares are not quite available to book, but get in there ahead and talk to us now about your holiday in Vietnam.

Coming up next week is one of the most important festivals in the Vietnamese calendar: Tet, or Vietnamese New Year. Tet marks the beginning of spring, and heralds the coming of a new zodiac animal sign for the year. It is a fresh beginning for Vietnamese people and the traditions carried out at this time reflect these beliefs. After taking up a degree in Vietnamese language at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, Seb Rumsby spent a year in Vietnam from September 2008 to 2009 to help his understanding of both Vietnamese culture and language. Hanoi at 1000 – Celebrations in October 2010

Gentle Sapa

We left the busyness of Hanoi for a couple of days in Sapa.’ This mountainside retreat was originally built for the French as a cool getaway in 1922 and after some years’of neglect has in recent years undergone a revival and is now a key tourist destination in Northern Vietnam – and with good reason.

Hanoi and Halong Bay

Hanoi is a very different city to Bangkok.’ One of the first things you notice is the architecture which is very French in style.’ Shutters and balconies on tall thin buildings painted in vibrant colours.

The other things you notice on the drive from the Airport are somewhat stereotypical.’ Numerous paddy fields and the Vietnamese “Non” hats made of palm leaves and bamboo.’ It takes you back to the movies!
